Longluan Lake (Longluantan)
Located in Hengchun Town of Pingtung County, Longluan Lake, or Longluantan is the largest natural freshwater lake in Taiwan. Back in old days during the Qing Dynasty, the area around Longluan Lake was heart of agriculture and fishing industries in Hengchun. Today, Longluan Lake is an important designated wetland in Taiwan for reservation of waterfowls and bird-watching.
Being a popular tourist spot in Kenting National Park for bird-watching, Longluan Lake has statistics showing that there are 180 migratory birds resting in lake area every year. The area around the lake is the winter habitat for shorebirds and waterfowls, and also the resting spot for many other migratory birds such as gray-faced buzzard.
Every year from October to November, visitors may find a number of rare birds in Longluan Lake area such as Black-Naped Oriole (Oriolus Chinensis Sharpe),Black Stork (Ciconia Nigra), Cotton Teal (Nettapus Coromandelianus), Gray-Baked Starling (Sturnus Sinensis), Gull-Billed Tern (Sterna Nilotica), Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus), Pochard (Aythya Ferina), Purple Heron (Ardea Purpurea), Red-Cheeked Starling (Sturnus Philippensis), Silky Starling (Sturnus Sericeus), White-Front Goose, and many others that one should not miss for a wonderful Kenting bird-watching tour.
Longluan Lake Nature Center was established in 1994 to protect the migratory birds and preserve the natural environment. An 800-meter path is also built for bird-watching. The Longluan Lake Nature Center is divided into 4 display areas, where visitors will be introduced to the area’s natural environment, ecological resources, migratory birds, as well as a number of telescopes for one to enjoy bird-watching.
